FAQs

Designing and building the safe

Q: Can a logic puzzle or mathematical puzzle be used as part of the safe?

A: No. The purpose of the safe is to be challenging in physics and not in other fields.

Q: Is it permissible to use a physics formula as part of the puzzle?

A: Yes, but the calculation should be simple and short, and the formula should be given to the burglars along with a calculator.

Q: Is it possible to build a safe that is uncrackable?

A: The challenge in cracking the safe should be based solely on the physical puzzle. A mechanism that would take too long to crack or would be too difficult to crack (after understanding the physics) would not be approved.

Examples of cases that would not be approved: too complicated orientation of mirrors for a small detector, difficult coordination of simultaneous actions, shooting a ball into a hole.

Q: Does the structure of the safe have to be original?

A: Yes. Mechanisms that are too similar to safes change Previous ones will not be successful because descriptions of previous safes are on the website and open to everyone, and the mechanisms will be too easy for the opposing teams to crack.

Q: Is it permissible to tell the burglars not to use or touch some of the components?

A: In a tournament, the burglars are allowed to do anything and use anything as long as they do not use excessive force and do not endanger the safe. If there are things you do not want them to touch, cover them or lock them.

Q: What happens if one of the teams destroys our safe during the competition?

A: You must build your safe strong and durable to prevent this from happening. Bring spare parts (light bulbs, batteries, etc.) and warn the burglars about weak points.

Q: Is it permissible to “hide” some of the items or use distractions in the safe so that the burglars have to find them?

A: No. The burglars must know about all the items they are allowed to use.

Q: Are there any size restrictions? The safe?

A: The safe can be as large or small as you want, provided that it fits through a door and can stand on a table. Make sure that there is easy access to every relevant part of the safe.

Q: Is it allowed to incorporate a fire safe? High voltage?

A: Any component that may cause danger must have safety measures and be approved by the tournament management. Any high voltage connection (V220) must be isolated from the possibility of contact by intruders. Any means of combustion (candle, gas burner) must have a stable base and a safe distance from flammable components.

Tournament progress

Q: Will there be time to finish building the safe on the morning of the competition?

A: You must arrive with a ready safe on the day of the competition.

Q: What happens if the tournament management does not approve the safe at one of the milestones?

A: The milestones are intended for monitoring your work by the tournament management. Failure to meet schedules and/or failure to meet requirements and meetings can result in expulsion.

Administrators and Grades

Q: How many students participate on each team?

A: Each team consists of 3 to 5 students.
